Rune CP
From PoxWiki
Introdution
For Runes to gain level, they require CP, or Character Points. CP is basically XP for your runes and no rune can have more than 200cp. As runes gain CP, that CP can be spent upgrading your rune. A rune's level depends on how much CP has been SPENT - not how much CP it actually has. For example, most Nora Miners have 200cp - but almost all only spend around 60cp for Nora Miner 3. As you upgrade a rune with CP, the rune increases in Nora cost of the rune - this is why most people do NOT spend all of a rune's CP on upgrades - because every rune would then cost well over 100 nora to deploy.
Rune Levels Spent CP Rune Level -------- ---------- 0-44 1 45-89 2 90-134 3 135-179 4 180-200 5
CP Gaining Strategies
- Dumping - This may be the single most effective way to quickly gain CP for a PARTICULAR rune. It's a horrible way to level an entire BattleGroup. If you simply do not cast anything except for the rune that you want to level (seriously, NOTHING else), then play that rune out and attack something once - then surrender. 10cp for your rune! Just do that like 10 times (takes about an hour) and you'll have 100cp - enough to make the rune playable and then you can just let the rune gain CP normally.
Rune Leveling Strategies
- The 100 nora threshold - Once a rune costs more than 100 nora to deploy, it can (typically) no longer be deployed during the first turn of gameplay. Only particularly strong runes are usually leveled to over 100 nora (Menalaus, for example, costs 107 nora before spending a single cp on him, and some runes such as the Battle Mage, DeepElf Assassin, Vindrax or Griffin Rider are notorious for making justifiable cases for running expensive at level 4-5 100+ nora, when appropriate to the deck build in question.)
evoke cornercase clarifies: Note that the threshold is 115 for Forglar players fortunate enough to draw a first round Marsh Song paried with, say, a 100+ nora upgraded Kartch or firk sensorate. A +5 or +10 1st round faction bonus to the player going second running a 10-10 Forglar or full faction Forglar also raises the threshold.
Strictly speaking, there are other rare perfect draw cornercases, such going second with three rune draws and playing Tribe Wars, sacrificing a Cyclops for overall recompensating profit, and playing a 100-120+ nora rune. Requires a perfect draw and an odd build, but it's workable. I've done it before by felicitous happenstance when running Tribe Wars trickdeck in Peaks era, I believe Kuri may have come across it independantly as well. Highly rare cornercase though.
Update: The Forglar Swamp nora bonus kicks in on 1st turn, and so the "100 nora threshold" is in fact 108 for a full FS battlegroup (and 104 for a 10/10 build). Kartch Finlord runs quite nicely at 108 nora, and the Firk Mindbreaker can be run at around 108 nora if you are using him with an assassination build.
